A source will not load: what to do in 30 seconds

The short answer

Short answer

Switch source, not settings. If a source shows a blank frame or spins for more than about 14 seconds, the source itself is usually down — the player already logs that, so picking a different source is faster than clearing anything.

Quick fix

  1. Wait for the 14-second timeout — it detects a dead frame and offers another source.
  2. Pick a different source in the list. If a second source also fails, the problem is the title, not the source.
  3. If every source fails on every title, check that the site has a TMDB key in /admin → Overview.

Separate the two failure types

A source that never paints a frame is different from a page that loads but has no playable video. The first is an outage; the second usually means the title is not in that source’s library.

To tell them apart: load the same source for a different, well-known title. If that works, the source is alive and simply does not carry the title you picked.

What the timeout actually does

The player arms a timer when the iframe is mounted. If the frame has not signalled that it painted within the configured window — 14 seconds by default — the player stops waiting and shows the fallback: the remaining sources, plus the trailer.

The timer is not a measure of your connection speed. It measures whether the third-party page responded at all, so a fast connection cannot rescue a dead source and a slow one does not cause a false failure as long as the frame paints something.

When it is your device

If the trailer also fails to play, the problem is local: a content blocker hiding the YouTube frame, a corporate network blocking video, or a browser without H.264 support. In that case the trailer is the diagnostic — the catalogue itself is plain HTML and will still render.

If the trailer plays and only the third-party source fails, no device setting will help. Use a different source or open the title on the Android app, which ships its own player and shield.

Common questions

How long should I wait before switching?

About 14 seconds on the default setting. The player shows the fallback itself at that point, so you do not have to count.

Can the operator see which sources fail?

The player reports the active source and the fallback event as anonymous counters, so the operator can retire a source that fails consistently.

Why do sources change over time?

Third-party player pages appear, change domains and disappear. The source list is configuration, not a fixed feature of the site.
